Supporting people in need of asylum

People have a basic right to live free from danger and when we treat people seeking asylum with compassion and dignity, they can get on with rebuilding their lives in the community.

Young refugees freed from Australian detention are then trapped by bridging visas that ban them from studying, deepening the damage inflicted by the immigration regime.

CAMPAIGN: #WeStandwithWomenGirlsinAfghanistan

The Campaign led by the RAR Afghan Sub-Committee is progressing. This campaign aims:

  1. to raise awareness in the community of the appalling situation of women and girls in Afghanistan so their situation is not forgotten or ignored;

  2. to urge the Australian Government to condemn the persecution and punishment of women and girls in Afghanistan as a crime against humanity, and call for the Taliban to immediately restore equal rights and freedoms to all women and girls;

  3. call for an increase in humanitarian aid for women and girls in Afghanistan.

Key strategies:

  • We have written to women’s organisations and international development agencies and are following these up.

  • We have an Open Letter to the Prime Minister – RAR groups can sign this by sending their logo to rar.australia@gmail.com

  • This Open Letter to the Prime Minister is available for groups to use to collect signatures, if your group has opportunity to do that. This is available on the RAR website: https://ruralaustraliansforrefugees.org.au/campaigning-for-change

  • We have a Calendar of Events in development. This will soon be on the RAR website (once technical difficulties are sorted!).

  • We encourage groups to plan activities for Refugee Week (16 – 22 June).

  • We have now printed 2,000 postcards to send to politicians. There are three cards with messages printed on the back to the Prime Minster, the Foreign Minister and the Minister for Women. There is another card which has the same message printed but is blank for you to use for your local politician/Senators.

  • We are working towards National Action in August.
